NW London Primary Care Protocol for Shielded Patients
ACTION: Download the protocol summary, the protocol, and the NHS Digital letter template here
Sir Simon Stevens’ letter to the NHS 29.04.2020 asked primary care to: “proactively contact all those in the ‘shielding’ cohort of patients who are clinically extremely vulnerable to Covid19, ensure they know how to access care, are receiving their medications, and provide safe home visiting wherever clinically necessary.”
To support this, NW London has developed a recommended clinical protocol for General Practice and Primary Care Networks to apply to their shielded population. There are two documents attached:
- A full protocol, which includes a detailed look at the protocol with recommended actions for GPs and Social Prescribers, and a clinical toolkit with wide range of resources and guidance.
- A summary protocol outlining the key actions for GPs to take with shielded patients.
- It is a recommended minimum standard of care for shielded patients, but areas that are already going above and beyond this should continue
Alongside the Protocol, WSIC has produced a new Shielded Patient Radar, freely available to all practices. It will:
- Provide a cleaned weekly update of patients on the shielded list
- Allow practices/PCNs to check the needs of patients on the shielded patients list
- Provide an update of the care plan status of shielded patients.
Template letter from NHS Digital
Please click here to download the letter provided by NHS Digital for use where patients who have previously been on the Shielded Patient List are now assessed as being at low or moderate risk. This letter should be sent to them when you request they are removed.

ACTION: Print the document available here and reference as needed
Local Paediatrician advice lines are provided below; these lines are designed to enable clinical discussion between all primary care professionals and a local on-call Paediatrician. These advice lines will enable quality out-of-hospital care through sharing of specialist knowledge where clinically safe children can be cared for within the community.
Centre for Perioperative Care (CPOC) FAQs re operations during Covid-19 pandemic
ACTION: Click here to view the guide
The NHS has announced that it will restart some surgical services which had been stopped to help hospitals cope with the Covid-19 pandemic. This means that some hospitals will start contacting patients on the waiting lists, especially urgent cases, about their delayed operations to arrange a date for the surgery. This series of FAQs, produced by the CPOC aims to address some of the concerns that you may have about going to hospital during the pandemic and to offer some advice on how you can best prepare for your operation.
